Oxidative stress and its impact on aging: a literature review
Main Article Content
Abstract
Life expectancy increased reflects in aging population, and consequently in an increase in diseases associated with it. Recent years have seen an increase of studies about this subject and this caused the development of many theories to explain this process among them is the Free Radicals Theory, now widely accepted. This theory defends the hypothesis that during normal aerobic metabolism, oxygen undergoes education to form reactive oxygen species, which would be added to other free radicals arising from different generating mechanisms. The body to defend itself against the damaging action of free radicals, has different antioxidant defense systems. The imbalance occurs in the formation of free radicals and in this process, there is na increase of the number of these reactive species, stage known as oxidative stress. In these cases, there would be a gradual loss of functional capacity of the cell, resulting in aging. However, definitive conclusions about the origin and development of aging require further studies, since this phenomenon may not have a fundamental cause.
Keywords: oxidative stress; aging; senescence; Oxigen-reactive species.
